I READ THIS BOOK BACK IN THE 80'S AND AM REREADING IT AGAIN. IT DOES A MAGNIFICENT JOB OF EXPLAINING THE CAUSES OF THE GREAT DEPRESSION FROM A WORLD WIDE PERSPECTIVE IN AN EASY TO UNDERSTAND FORMAT.
Possibly an important book.

It's surprising there aren't any reviews for this one. I came to the page to read other people's reviews. Anyway, after looking over the book I read many years ago, it still seems to make a lot of sense. The author looked at the Depression as a world crisis. Some of the blowhards on cable and radio have been saying the Depression wasn't that important in other countries, that it was all Roosevelt's fault, and without World War II it wasn't going to end. John Garraty says it would have ended in a year or two without The war and that it was a big deal in other countries. In England it was called the Great Slump instead of Depression, but still very serious. In Germany they ended it early by becoming a militaristic society, and we know how that turned out. The book shows several problems "The" depression caused for many countries and I think it is an excellent perspective. Maybe there has been recent information to refute some of his thesis or maybe people just aren't reading older books on this subject, but I think it is a good book.
