The Golden Box

I'm so glad I stumbled on Frances Crane, after decades of reading mysteries. This book is a cleverly written whodunit that brought the beginning of World War II to life better than any history lesson ever could. The characters felt quite real, and the ending was, if not a total surprise, at least not one that was telegraphed throughout the book.
