Book Overview

From the acclaimed, New York Times bestselling award-winning author of Serena and The Cove, thirty of his finest short stories, collected in one volume.

No one captures the complexities of Appalachia--a rugged, brutal landscape of exquisite beauty--as evocatively and indelibly as author and poet Ron Rash. Winner of the Frank O'Connor International Short Story Award, two O Henry prizes, and a finalist for the PEN/Faulkner Award, Rash brilliantly illuminates the tensions between the traditional and the modern, the old and new south, tenderness and violence, man and nature. Though the focus is regional, the themes of Rash's work are universal, striking an emotional chord that resonates deep within each of our lives.

Something Rich and Strange showcases this revered master's artistry and craftsmanship in thirty stories culled from his previously published collections Nothing Gold Can Stay, Burning Bright, Chemistry, and The Night New Jesus Fell to Earth. Each work of short fiction demonstrates Rash's dazzling ability to evoke the heart and soul of this land and its people--men and women inexorably tethered to the geography that defines and shapes them. Filled with suspense and myth, hope and heartbreak, told in language that flows like "shimmering, liquid poetry" (Atlanta Journal Constitution), Something Rich and Strange is an iconic work from an American literary virtuoso.

Excellent

I loved it. It was a lovely love/adventure story with real characters and a good ending. It's not one of those stereo typical books where the girl OF COURSE gets the guy in the end. LOVE LOVE LOVE.

Ithaka book review

Ithaka was a book that I took great pride in reading. I found myself enticed by the book and its accurate historic events. Having already read the first book "Troy" also by the author Adele Geras, I found myself hoping that Ithaka would be as good or better as the first. I was proven correct. The novel starts out with fresh characters in their early years. I have always enjoyed when an author does this because I feel I can...

Adolescence is Given a Mythic Resonance

Readers familiar with THE ODYSSEY know that it is the story of Odysseus's long journey home from the Trojan War. Odysseus outwits various monsters, witches, and even the gods to win back his kingdom and rescue his faithful wife from the hands of thieves. THE ODYSSEY contains lots of adventure, excitement and heartache. It can also be a challenging read since even modern translations adhere to its original verse format. Adèle...

Stories Weaved in Shrouds

It has been many years since King Odysseus has left to fight in the Trojan War. And many on the island from which he rules, Ithaka think that he is dead. Only a few still believe that he is alive, one of whom is his devoted wife, Queen Penelope. Not only must the lonely queen deal with running the island and its many affairs, but with Odysseus' quite mother Antikleia and temperamental father Laertes. Not to mention she and...

Most Excellent Novel

This book has everything a person might want in a novel, not to mention one in the historical fiction genre. Adele Geras has proved time and time again how to capture the true elements of love, passion, war and time. What a joy!
