Book Overview

San Francisco magician Emma Passant is puzzled by her grandfather's cryptic will. He writes that she is to "take her place at the helm and turn the wheel on the legacy that I have kept hidden from her". As Emma ponders these elusive words, a friend of hers is fatally shot--by the same gun that was used to kill her grandfather. The mystery begins to come together, however, upon the disappearance of a model boat--the replica of a boat her grandfather...

Definitely one of my favorites!

This book was incredible. I've read it three times, and every time I get caught up in the story and the characters. My mother read the book, and also loved it. Emma is so well created that I start to feel like I'm living her story, and experiencing what she experiences. I definitely recommend this to everyone!

searching for snow but finding a life

i read this book in one sitting and couldn't turn the pages fast enough! emma as heroine is alive, spunky and full of zest--her inquisitiveness makes the story happen...a clever title which ties the entire story together!

Couldn't put it down!

Oh how I love a good mystery! The characters in this book are well developed and pleasurable to read about. Highly recommended!

My second best book of the year!

There is something so genuine in Mathes' books. The relationship between Emma and her grandfather is revealed as the mystery unwinds. Emma's magic tricks add an element of fun to this already delightful book.

Funny, touching, charming. A very good read

I know this book was one of the Library Journal's ten best of the year, and I'm not surprised. Charles Mathes has a really unique voice. I loved his first book, THE GIRL WITH THE PHONY NAME. This book has a different heroine. I wanted to read more about Lucy and Tak Wing, but I wasn't disappointed with Emma Passant. I really couldn't put this book down.
