Not too gory, but heart-breaking and then heart-warming at the end

This gives a wonderful insight into the daily horrors happening in ISIS territories. Ruthless destruction, rape, and murder, always seem so far away from our first-world problems, but these kinds of books can open your eyes. Not to mention that the entire political and social climate in the Mid-East since the 90's has painted a s**t picture for them, and Westerners can't seem to see the fact that NOT everyone, not even most people, are involved in terrorist groups. Atrocities are happening to regular citizens in all the countries over there, more than they are happening to Westerners. Similar books that shed light on these issues are: Reading Lolita in Tehran (great for those who love literature about literature), Mayada: Daughter of Iraq, A Thousand Splendid Suns and The Kite Runner (both by Khaled Hosseini, both historical fiction novels that have dramatic and beautiful plots high-lighting the issues of modern Afghanistan.
