If this is the wonderful book I remember...it is a rather tall and narrow book and it has two stories: one from the front cover and then turn upside down and the other starts the other way. I never read the second one..somethng about faraway places and pear trees..but the first one I loved to read..by myself at that age :) I am going to buy it now just to remember how it goes. I remember it had beautiful pastel illustrations and being quite upset at the "fur flying" but it must have had an intriguing ending for me to like it! After ordering "Alexander and the Wind-Up Mouse" and "Home for a Bunny" this was the only other book I can remember from childhood.
a warm and familar poem with whimsical drawings

The poem by Field "The Gingham Dog and the Calico Cat" is available in a variety of anthologies for children who enjoy poetry for its own sake. It is also an excellent choice for parents to memorize and recite to their children: "The gingham dog and the calico cat/ Side by side on the table sat". But for parents who are more comfortable with a book and children who are more comfortable with pictures, this book is an excellent choice - right down to their eating each other up!
