A horse story with wallop

This book is emotionally complex and does not talk down to the young reader. It engages from the beginning on the struggle to fit in, and dealing with life in a dysfunctional family with a dark history. The interplay of real and imagined is strong, illustrating coping techniques many of us use in one form or another on life's path. The relationships are modern, not traditional, and the characters are rich but not always sympathetic. This is the tale of a young adolescent girl who is pushed to cope with some of the harsher realities of the adult world around her (a selfish father, a favourite grandmother with alzheimers, a mother who is on her own journey of personal growth and discovery) over which she has little control, while finding joy and empowerment through newfound friendships with peers and a special animal. The dark, the ugly, and the violent are all in this book. But so is joy, redemption, wit, strength, forgiveness and survival. This is no sappy horse book. It holds the full spectrum of human experience. I loved this book and so did my 10 year old daughter. I would reccommend it to 11-14 year olds and their parents, as this book is a great catalyst for family discussion.

Fantasy and real life can come together.

I found this book full of wonderful imagery, and real-life dillemmas. It had me in tears by the end, and had many correlates to my own life and the lives of those I know. I have lent the book to several young people and they love it. I now use the book in my practice, reading the first chapter to the children I work with. It is so popular that I have to carry extra copies to sell to clients who want to read the rest!
