A really smart book for kids with taste

This book doesn't gloss over history or reality. As a good yarn, it's a page-turner, with surprises page after page. On top of that, however, anybody who reads it, kid or adult, will come away knowing a whole lot more about what really went on in Ireland in the 19th century, and be smarter for it. It's more than a good read, it's user-friendly education.

Pleasures

The book The Galty Prize was a reading pleasure for both my wife and I. It's a really enjoyable novel of old Ireland,and the tribulations of the natives, based on a great deal of research research. The story is mainly about the aspirations of a family, but concentrates on the dreams of a young girl for her and her family's future,and the result of those dreams. We would recommend it as good easy reading for young people as well as adults of any age. PAW

Kudos from a Grandpa

It's too bad this book isn't required reading for every girl about to become a young woman. Maggie Shannon of County Tipperary, Ireland makes this difficult transition in a wonderful tale of horses, family, patriots and young love that is sensitive, exciting and immensely satisfying. I can hardly wait until my two granddaughters are old enough to understand and enjoy this delightful novel!

With spectacular imagery and fantastic writing, Tolle truly allows the reader to get into the skin of nineteenth-century teen Maggie Shannon, whose family depends on the charity of their landlord, Sir Henry Drummond. While Maggie's sensible older brother Joe disregards Grandfather's stories of the magic of Ireland, Maggie, however, loves to hear stories of the courageous Irish kings of old, and of her grandfather and father's triumph in the impossible local horserace, the Galty Chase. The winner recieves gold and the ownership of the trophy until the next race, and anyone who wins three times with the same horse wins the trophy forever. Her father and grandfather have won twice, and Maggie dreams of going a step further, but they have no horse to ride with, as poverty is closing fast around them. Maggie at last finds a mysterious coin, and she and her friend Brendan Connory use the coin and its magic powers to buy a horse, whom Maggie names Pegasus. But can Maggie and Pegasus ride to victory?
