"The Fruit Machine" is a compilation of his writings that originally appeared in the gay press, journals of academia and various anthologies. He shows the history of critical sensibilities toward gay film and how gay cinema fits in the overall body of film criticism. Waugh looks at some of the great films of the gay cinema canon, examines several of the great filmmakers such as Fassbinder and Eisenstein and writes about some of the film personalities who have emerged as gay icons. We learn of the censorship issues and the AIDS epidemic as we review all movie genre--documentary, mainstream and erotica.
