Ranging from Louis XVI's succession to the throne in 1774 to the Battle of Waterloo in 1815 and Napoleon's subsequent exile in St Helena, this single volume comprises a first-hand account of one of the major political eras of modern history.
I used this book for research on the French Revolution for a screenplay set during that period. It was a welcome break from dry history books and let the people from that era speak in their own flowery, angry and courtly words. It also provides a useful timeline. The revolution lasted about ten years, and it keeps track of when the Bastille was stormed, the king beheaded, etc. The book has little narrative but offers short, vivid glimpses into the past.
