I love to read historical fiction about places that I have or will visit. The Foundling, which takes place in Victorian London is an easy read that combines history, adventure, mystery, and a humanistic theme of loss and redemption. The unfolding of a mysterious murder and kidnapping are interwoven with human emotions and self-discovery. While I was reading this book I found myself becoming very involved with the characters and plot. It was an experience that I used to feel as a child when I could just let my imagation go with the flow of the book! The experiences of the foundling, girl character and the canal folk that found her touched a warm spot in my heart. I truly enjoyed the way Mr. Boast researched the various areas of London, canal life, police and detective work, the life of London street people, and the upper classes and their servants. It was almost like I was there observing these people and places. I think this would make a great Master Piece Theater! I am now quite a fan of Phillip Boast. I plan on reading everyhing that I can get my hands on by him. It was a pleasant surprise to find a new author to read. So far I have read Deus, Resurrection, City. I plan on getting all his other books, even the ones that are out of print.
