THE FORTUNES OF JADED WOMEN by Carolyn Huynh Sometimes $2 book deals yield more value in entertainment than other books at full price. This is one of those times. This is a multi-generational story about the relationship dynamics between Vietnamese immigrant mothers/sisters and their American born daughters. Their daughters have grown up trying to balance living up to their mother’s expectations (marrying well and making money) while trying to be independent and marrying for love. I appreciate the family tree at the beginning of the book because there were so many characters (fourteen!) with very similar names. It was confusing at first, but one I got about halfway through the plot lines fell into place. I enjoyed the family squabbles, the petty jealousies, the scandals, the clutching of the fake LVs, and gossip throughout the book. It made me laugh and reminded me of other movies/books (Joy Luck Club and Crazy Rich Asians - even though no one in this story is crazy-rich). Overall, this was cute, chaotic, funny and somewhat relatable. Who doesn’t want to read about a dysfunctional yet beautiful family of strong, stubborn and successful women? Recommend if you want something messy yet heart warming and fun. Rating: 3.75/5 ⭐️
