This book is one of the most influential books of my life. I first read it in college and am now in my 40's, and the message is just as true now as then. The basic idea of this book is that it is the feminine side of humanity that offers more by nature and by practice the kinder, softer things in life (cookies after school, casseroles to sick friends, love notes in a lunch bag). By nature, men are providers and protectors, which leaves women freer to pursue the things in life which make it endurable, or better yet, enjoyable for others. Why do women love birds, butterflies and flowers? Are these things neccessary for survival? No, but by their very existence, these things offer diversion from the harsher facts of life. In the same way, if women do not do these kinds of things, neighbors, relatives and loved ones are starved from these small gestures of love and kindness. Life becomes nothing but a basic struggle for existence. In my opinion, this book is a call for us to be women in practice as well as by nature. Do you have a beloved mother, grandmother or aunt? Why do you love her? Probably because she did these small tokens of love for you and made you feel secure, loved and important. I want to be a woman like that- someone who makes life better for others and left the world a better place for her being in it.This book needs to be reprinted.
