I first read this book when I was very young. I had not attempted a 'long' novel before. I read it in just three days and could not believe my accomplishment. This happened because the book was very much a page-turner. Not only was the subject -- a man with lung cancer has the rare opportunity to hold onto life by surgically having artificial gills implanted -- interesting, but the characters were well-developed and believable. The scientific background of the book is thorough, and the events that happen are very logical. It all made sense. The characters' reactions were rich, emotional, and authentic. If you can find it, you'll enjoy it.
Incredible emotional intensity. I couldn't put it down!

An amazing story of an incredible scientific experiment. I experienced all the range of emotions:fear, anger, joy, hope, wonder, and more. Setlowe does an amazing job of filling out the characters' personalities and making them seem unbelievably real. I highly recommend this work!
