I teach a worship course for seminarians so am constantly searching for the best thinking on the subject. This Lutheran pastor has hit the mark with a bulls-eye! His conception of worship as needing to embrace heart (volitional), soul (emotional), mind (mental) and strength (physical) is thoroughly biblical and offers rich insight and application for worship. Rognlien first observes and describes how various worship traditions generally have a primary and secondary strength, then challenges all worship traditions to aim for a more well-rounded offering for their worshipers. The book is especially helpful for emergent worship thanks to Rognlien's emphasis on a holistic EXPERIENCE of worship; yet the book has practical application for all generations and worship traditions. I've make the book required reading for my seminary students, yet Rognlien writes in a style that is accessible to non-students as well. His descriptive writing, personal sharing, story-telling, and practical idea-sharing makes the book an engaging read. I highly recommend "Experiential Worship", especially for pastors and worship leaders, but also for anyone wanting to grow in their understanding and practice of Christian worship.
