This book documents the fascinating experiments in consciousness expansion undertaken by an Australian, Michael Graham, over three decades. Unlike many spiritual seekers in the 1960s, Graham's quest was not birthed out of dissatisfaction with Western culture and religion, or from the psychedelic scene that was to send many of his generation eastward. Rather, an innate mystical giftedness combined with a keen intellect, put him on the path at a young age. As a teenager, without doing anything to induce it, nor having a philosophical background to conceptualize it, Graham had a mystical encounter in which he experienced the oneness of the universe (non-duality, which in India is most often associated with Advaita Vedanta). The ensuing hunger and curiosity soon put Graham on a trail that would lead to the ashram of the Indian super-guru Muktananda (1908-1982). Being naturally adept, Graham became one of Muktananda's prized pupils, mastering both the precepts and practices of siddha yoga. He soon found himself in the guru's inner circle, in a fascinating relationship that would continue until the master's death, nearly three decades later. After Muktananda's demise, Graham went on to explore various mind-expanding new age psycho-technologies, even developing a successful seminar curriculum. As Graham recounts his decades-long journey, he never speaks of becoming disgruntled or disappointed either with Muktananda and siddha yoga, or with the other teachers and techniques he encountered along the way. Nevertheless, in the 1990s, Graham's life was suddenly and radically altered. And--reminiscent of his first experience--the change came through an unexpected mystical encounter, but this time an encounter of a very different nature. Anyone interested in mystical states of consciousness, the guru movement of the 1970s, or new age spirituality will find The Experience of Ultimate Truth to be a fascinating read.
