Spiritual Autobiography by an Early Western Devotee of Swami Muktananda

From Foreword by Philip Johnson Founder, New Age Mission Australia "This book you are about to read is the spiritual autobiography of an ardent disciplined devotee, Michael Graham. He has a fascinating and compelling journey to share that straddles four continents, spanning over 30 years. Through his eyes you will be taken into the charismatic, intoxicating worlds of Hinduism and the human potential branch of 'New Age' style spirituality. This is not a ho-hum, so what, who cares, take it or leave it story. Michael is distinguished as one who has robbed shoulders with the leading gurus and teachers of our time. As he discloses, Michael was among the first three Western devotees of Swami Muktananda's first world tour in 1970. He would spend 16 years in the movement, working in, or managing, the ashrams in Ganeshpuri, Miami, Los Angeles, New York and Melbourne. However, Michael was not just involved in Siddha Yoga. He spent time with other leading gurus such as Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh (now know as Osho), Swami Rudrananda, Da Free John, U.G. Krishnamurit and H.W. L. Poonja. He also explored mind powers in Silva Mind Control, the Forum and 'Avatar.' Michael met 'New Age' luminaries like Marilyn Ferguson and Ingo Swann, and was a friend of the esoteric writer Israel Regardie. He went on to become successful mind power teacher in his own right, combining the best insights that he had found in both Hindu and Human Potential thought. Micheal's story winds its way across the decades and continents and brings us to a startling and amazing mystical experience that has transformed and empowered his entire being. His thirst for authentic spirituality was slaked in a dramatic and powerful encounter with the divine being who made our world. From that explosive movement, Michael has walked in a new direction, a spiritual discipline filled with grace and thanksgiving. He has some deep thoughts to share on what this means for him. He believes what he has discovered also has implications for those of us who are willing to listen."

A fascinating journey of consciousness

This book documents the fascinating experiments in consciousness expansion undertaken by an Australian, Michael Graham, over three decades. Unlike many spiritual seekers in the 1960s, Graham's quest was not birthed out of dissatisfaction with Western culture and religion, or from the psychedelic scene that was to send many of his generation eastward. Rather, an innate mystical giftedness combined with a keen intellect, put him on the path at a young age. As a teenager, without doing anything to induce it, nor having a philosophical background to conceptualize it, Graham had a mystical encounter in which he experienced the oneness of the universe (non-duality, which in India is most often associated with Advaita Vedanta). The ensuing hunger and curiosity soon put Graham on a trail that would lead to the ashram of the Indian super-guru Muktananda (1908-1982). Being naturally adept, Graham became one of Muktananda's prized pupils, mastering both the precepts and practices of siddha yoga. He soon found himself in the guru's inner circle, in a fascinating relationship that would continue until the master's death, nearly three decades later. After Muktananda's demise, Graham went on to explore various mind-expanding new age psycho-technologies, even developing a successful seminar curriculum. As Graham recounts his decades-long journey, he never speaks of becoming disgruntled or disappointed either with Muktananda and siddha yoga, or with the other teachers and techniques he encountered along the way. Nevertheless, in the 1990s, Graham's life was suddenly and radically altered. And--reminiscent of his first experience--the change came through an unexpected mystical encounter, but this time an encounter of a very different nature. Anyone interested in mystical states of consciousness, the guru movement of the 1970s, or new age spirituality will find The Experience of Ultimate Truth to be a fascinating read.
