Nick Delaney shows up in the office Rachel works, he has in tow his orphaned niece Jenny, who won't stop crying for anyone but Rachel. Soon Rachel's boss sends her to rescue Nick, who plays hard to get all through the book. Rachel as a last ditch effort goes to skin-diving classes so she can show Nick she wouldn't curb his adventurous side. He still rejects her to the point that when he runs out of air on their dive, he wouldn't let Rachel know until he was almost out of breath. She saw he was having trouble and went to help him (again) and in fact saved his life. But our reluctant hero still holds out, he won't be stuck in a boring relationship with anyone, now or ever. Until he realizes he needs her more than just for a nanny for Jenny.
