The Exchange," by first time novelist Inga C. Ellzey, is subtitled "The right murder. The wrong person. The perfect love story." It's like Agatha Christie meets Murder She Wrote on a 5-star Mediterranean cruise romance cruise, along with a travelogue. However, the romance is a more explicit making this an adult read. Jewelle Dawson is in the witness protection program for testifying against a top New York Mafia Don. The Don ordered her face slashed and half her right index finger cut off as a warning against testifying, but she did anyway. Seven years later, Jewelle is fed up with her life and against the FBI agent's advice, who is her witness protection caseworker, went on a Mediterranean cruise to re-capture excitement in her life. This story was like a TV show. The main players were all beautiful people, surrounded by wonderful food, service, sites, shopping, and loving supportive spouses and or love interests - sort of like Love Boat. The plot was interesting and had some turns which I didn't expect. I really enjoyed the descriptions of the places they visited. I never heard of sea glass until reading it here. After googling some of the islands, I can see how well Ellzey describes the natural beauty. This is book one but the ending in not quite a cliffhanger. All but one of the issues are resolved in this novel and that issue is a personnel one to Jewelle. Ellzey has provided enough information to have strong opinions on how this should resolve in the next book, but not enough to be sure.
This one really takes you places

I enjoyed reading this novel because the author uses very descriptive language that allows you to develop a lot of images in your mind. It seemed like she really spent a lot of time building up the characters and that payed off for her. Randy was an interesting character and I think it was a good idea to include her in the novel. It's a good read that would probably also make a good movie. Just a thought.
