The authors have a great insight into their subject matter. I love books that are small in size but full of information - no 'puffing up' the book here. A great overview of the political and social changes that bridged the gap between the 'Barbarian' age (my phrasing) and Charlemange's rule. I'm not an historian, so I didn't need a full tomb on the Merovengian period. This book filled an important gap in my knowledge of history to the extent that I needed. p.s. There is an original (and insightful) view of Charlemange's reaction to his coronation by the Pope, put forward in the book, that nicely leads into the next historic period.
