This is a verse by verse commentary and at times phrase by phrase commentary on an Epistle that the Apostle Paul wrote to the Colossian Church to encourage the believers and teach them how to combat the false teaching of Gnosticism. In correcting this false teaching the Apostle puts special emphasis on the fact that Christ is the Head of His Church. It is not man's church - it is the Church of Christ for He said "Upon this Rock (speaking of Himself) I will build my Church - ekklesia - and the forces of darkness shall not prevail against it" (Matthew 16:18). For those who want to be picky and say that the word "church" is not in the Bible, I would say you are correct because the Bible was not written in English and church is an English word. The Greek word is "ekklesia" translated as church which also is an incorrect translation. Jesus didn't build something material, nor even something institutional. Ekklesia does NOT refer to facility, building, temple, house, or anything of the sort. Neither does it mean organization, institution, community center, or anything of that manner. The correct translation of the Greek word "ekklesia" is "called out ones." This one was crafted in the Spirit as a body of His living temple; the Saints (2 Corinthians 6:16). In other words, Matthew 16:18 refers to the saints assembled. It is an organism, not an organization and its facility and Christ is the Head of that organism.
