This is a brilliant debut that captures a wistful moment when everything was perfect for our hero Shaquille, right before it all went to Heck. Sure, it's satire of "scenes" and suburbia, but there's something more--a hope that a scene can be more than itself, and a resigned regret when that turns out to be untrue. READ. THIS. BOOK.

For those who are 20 and 30 something.

Even though I don't fall into the age category of the title of my review, I enjoyed reading The Enchanters vs. Sprawlburg Springs. The characters were original. The storyline was intriguing. The climax to the story took a twist that I had not expected. I'm hoping for a sequel.

Are the Football Helmets a Metaphor for the Handoff of the Scene?

"The Enchanters..." is a superb short-length novel ostensibly about the burnout of a small-time punk band in a middle class suburban hellhole. But, really, there's more to it than that. As we follow the raucous lives of the four members of The Enchanters and a dozen or so minor players, Costello expertly weaves a stirring punk rock philosophy lesson through the narrative. Ultimately, "The Enchanters..." becomes a story about the flux of inspiration, creation and expression (and its sheer contagion) in the lives of kids who are smart enough to know that the best fun is the kind you make yourself.
