A Trio of Western Tales!

Three tales from the pen of well-known Western scribe Wayne Overholser make up this 2008 Leisure Books paperback. Among his accomplishments, Overholser is one of the few writers to have won three Spur Awards. THE DURANGO STAGE features two short stories - 'Grangers, Get Your Guns!' and 'It's Hell to be a Hero!' along with the novella-length 'Durango Stage.' The first tale has ex-gunfighter-turned-farmer Ed Rawlins reluctantly strapping on his six-gun to stop an unscrupulous land developer. Lawyer Ed Casey becomes an unlikely hero - and then the town pariah, thanks to a double-dealing banker - in the middle story. The plot of Overholser's final tale places Ollie Dutton, a miner toting $10,000, on a stagecoach facing outlaws, renegade Indians and a four-flushing businessman. This story is the best of the three, the length enabling Overholser to bring the characters to life. All in all, a mixed bag of stories but enjoyable. Recommended.

Western Fiction

The book was two short stories and, the main story. I found all of the stories good reading. It was easy reading. Enjoyed the difference in each story. Good reading for Western buffs.

Catch the Durango Stage

Reading a Dorchester/Leisure western is like stepping into a time machine. Take away the cover, and it is almost like you have strolled into your favourite drug store, and picked up a copy of Thrilling Six Guns, Ace Western, or Star Magazine. "The Durango Stage" is Wayne Overholsers' umpteenth collection, and includes "Grangers, Get Your Guns", "It's Hell To Be A Hero", and the "The Durango Stage". Grangers is a standard tale, that plays on the gun slinger turned peaceful farmer who can't quite escape his past, and his past that isn't done with him yet. The title piece, "Durango Stage", takes Ollie Dutton through a wild territory with one goal in mind, get $10,000 back from Denver to Durango so he can purchase the Katydid mine. Trouble is never far away. "It's Hell" tackles the big question, what makes a hero and what are the consequences of heroism? Overall, this is a solid book from a publisher who continues to impress readers around the world. For those who are not familiar with the rest of the story, Leisure, DL, publishes an incredible array of romance, fantasty, western, and juvenile books as well. My only criticsm is that I wish the cover could have been larger and more detailed. The painting is amazing...just who is the artist? Tim Lasiuta
