Modern day rake finds love with a wholesome librarian

Usually I am not a huge fan of paranormal or modern day romances but Kat Martin's The Dream had me hooked thanks to a sexy bad boy hero and a sweet but tortured heroine. Genny Austin is a widow living in Southern California when she begins to have horrific nightmares about a woman who owns a Caribbean island plantation. Genny is a librarian, in an almost relationship with her deceased husband's business partner. She doesn't have an overly exciting life so she cannot understand why she is having such vivid dreams. While walking along the beach one night (she has terrible insomnia) she is rescued from some thugs by Jack Brennan. He owns a ship salvaging business and he lives on his boat near Genny's condo. He is a modern day rake, totally uninterested in a long term relationship and he just can't understand how he could be attracted to wholesome Genny. He likes fast cars and fast women. They have a great romance, albeit an almost reluctant one since Jack feels they have nothing in common. Jack gets close to Genny then finds reasons to back away from their romance, really he is looking for convenient excuses not to feel anything more than basic lust and friendship with her. Jack is concerned though about Genny's dreams because they are becoming more violent and threatening. As stated earlier, Genny's dreams are about a woman who is mistress of a plantation, she orders slaves about with a wicked temper and is totally self involved. The woman in her dreams is so vicious that Genny feels compelled to investigate these dreams further, leading her to Jamaica to discover if this woman really existed. There is also a mystery happening in Genny's conscious state, who murdered her husband and why? However, neither this mystery nor the reasons for Genny's dreams ever overshadowed the main theme of this novel which is the building romance between Genny and Jack.

Fantastic!

I agree with the other reviews, this book was fantastic! I've never heard of Kasey Mars or Kat Martin, but I will definitely be looking into her other books. The characters were smart, honest, weren't manipulative and changed through out the book. And surprisingly for a romance -- most of it was believable -- the love affair definitely was. And there were some pretty hot scenes. Quite an enjoyable read!

Well worth the read!

I am an avid fan of Kat Martin. I have every book she has written (including The Silent Rose, aka, Kasey Mars). Historical Romance is my first love, however, when one of my favorite HR writers ventures into the contemporary genre, I give them a chance to impress me. Paranormal is not a subject I normally buy.What made me sit up and read eagerly to the end, is the fact that historical or modern subject, Kat Martin is one of the most unique, masterful writers we have today. Every chapter was well written and defined to perfection. Kat's hero and heroine, Jack and Genny, come to life, enabling me to automatically take them personally to heart. "The dream" is one of the most enjoyable, well plotted contemporary novels I've read to date.If you're looking for a well written, interesting read, I highly recommend Kat Martin's novel, "The Dream". Seldom do I read a contemporary novel a second time. This one I will. Too many details and marvelous plot turns to absorb the first time around.

I absolutely loved this book!

I read the Silent Rose in 1994 and The Dream in 1995. I can't wait for you to come out with another book. I can't believe it's been this long. I check at my book store all the time for something new. Please write again soon! I would love to hear if there is something in the works so I can keep watching.
