A written sermon, enjoyable and mostly a quick read

Reading this book is a lot like listening to a sermon... read out loud. Dr. Jeffress writes like he preaches. That makes the book an easy read, highly accessible, and easy to move through. It's a good, thorough exposition of the various components Paul outlines we need for our spiritual protection. Dr. Jeffress also delves a bit into spiritual warfare, and dispels a lot of myths about demonic influence, possession, etc. Thoroughly good stuff. My only pseudo-complaint is that, like almost any sermon that must serve 20-year olds and 60-year olds, marrieds, singles, etc., is that by definition the book doesn't get into as much nitty-gritty detail as I'd like. As a 32-year old, the attacks leveled at me are somewhat different than they are for a 56-year old widow, or an 18-year old college student. But this book gives me the foundational principles to then go dig into those more specific topics on my own, and never stray from Scripture.

Divine Defense

The Divine Defense: Six Simple Strategies for Winning Your Greatest Battles. It delivers. It is well written and does give you a direction to go. This is a regious book and as such, the effectiveness of the book depends on the reader being motivated enough to follow through with the thoughts and ideas being presented by the author.

Strategies for winning spiritual battles

Review by Richard R. Blake for Reader Views (11/06) Are you out of your comfort zone when thinking about levitating bodies, exorcising demons, and creepy voices? Jeffress has written this book to help those unaware of the spiritual battle we are in as Christians, and to the Christian fixated to the point of obsession, those giving more attention to the work of Satan than the work of Christ. In "The Divine Defense" Jeffress draws from the passage in Ephesians chapter six on the spiritual armor to suggest six powerful strategies for protecting our faith and to help our families face spiritual battles. Quotations and illustrations drawn from well known and highly respected theologians and Christian authors authenticate the importance of the principles expressed by the author. Contemporary illustrations from the life and ministry of the author himself help the reader identify, and assimilate, these practical, personal life principles. I was impressed with the solid Biblical basis Jeffress maintained throughout the book. His work is well researched and documented with a wide variety of contemporary sources, and scripture references. The book is divided into three parts: Understanding the enemy, strategies for success in the divine defense, and living the divine defense. The material is well organized, clearly articulated, interesting, and informative. I personally appreciated the format of the book. The topical headings within each chapter, the easy to read print, and the logical presentation, the simplicity of the definitions of theological terms, all work together to make this an incredible reading experience. A study guide is provided for personal study or small group discussion. The questions offer stimulating, thought-provoking material from each chapter of the book. Credits for the well chosen quotations are included at the end of the book and become an excellent resource for future reading and study. Robert Jeffress, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Wichita Falls, Texas, a church of 9,500 members, and Bible teacher on the internationally broadcast Pathway to Victory television program, is well qualified to author this book. The "The Divine Defense" equips the reader with a practical strategy for living. This book should be read by every pastor, Bible, teacher, student, and individual Christian. It is a book to read, to study, and to reread. Numerous endorsements for this book verify the importance of the theme "The Divine Defense" and the concrete presentation and conclusions of the author, Robert Jeffress. I concur with their glowing recommendations. Jeffress' book is a wake up call for today's Christian.
