helped us with our parenting skills

It's worth the read. We were so desperate when we realized we had a "difficult" child. Our approach was not working, so we bought lots of books. My husband and I both read this book. This provided such a good foundation for discipline and child psychology. It helped me understand bad behavior by breaking it down to the basic needs of a child. We averted so many tantrums by giving hugs instead of lectures, and stopping myself before I lost my temper. The only thing I didn't like were some the key phrases, like "show me the goods." She uses that phrase over and over. Everytime I read that line and I had to replace it in my head with "show me good behavior" And she uses a REALLY long phrase that says "you didn't show me respect, restraint, good self-control, behavior......etc" and basically you have to just delete what doesn't apply to that situation, and fill in the blank with the appropriate word. Hard to explain, but you get the hang of it once you read the book. And I don't like referring to myself as "the boss" but the concept did help me accept that I need to do things in my kids best interest, not what they always want me to do.

Good Book for my Wife and I

We have two kids and have struggled with some issues this book really helped us with. We will keep it around to reread several times... there are real gems in amongst the pages.

I have read other books and been left thinking there was something wrong with me. This book gave me what I needed to figure out things on my own while knowing I am doing the right thing. My husband and I refer back to certain sections all the time... we use it as an indispensable reference book!!!

Simple to understand yet amazing concepts!

I found the book amazingly easy to read and understand yet the topics were great ideas with simple application. The format of the book has been really convenient to use as a bed-side parenting clutch. I've read other parenting books that tell you exactly what is right and what is wrong but without any help applying the ideas. I've been most impressed that this book gives you the ideas and examples, but allows the freedom to apply the ideas in your own style. Great read for any new parent!
