On June 4, 2002, the Smart family was uncharacteristically busy, and Lois spent the day catching up on much needed work before the family embarked on the day's activities. They had to attend the funeral of a grandfather, and on top of that, Elizabeth was going to receive an award at school. The principal had requested that Elizabeth play her harp during the award ceremony, so she had to be at the venue before the event started. Despite the time constraints and getting the six children to the events, Lois was able to pull it off without a hitch. At the end-of-year ceremony, Elizabeth bagged several awards for physical fitness and academics. By the time they made it home that evening however, everyone was bone tired. Lois whipped up dinner for the family, and hustled to bed to get some sleep. Elizabeth, who was 14, shared a room with her 9-year-old sister, Mary Katherine. Lois made her way through the children's bedrooms after she prepared for bed, and found Elizabeth reading to Mary Katherine. She listened in for a few minutes, but then made her way into her bedroom. Elizabeth grew more tired as she read, and the two girls finally decided to call it a night. At around 2 a.m. on June 5, 2002, Elizabeth was woken up by a male voice whispering in her ear "I have a gun at your throat. Don't make a sound. Get up and come with me." When she opened her eyes, she saw a tall figure looming over her, and immediately felt something cold against her throat. Afraid of what the man would do to her family if she didn't comply with his instruction, she got out of bed quietly and stood up.Mary Katherine was startled by the sound of movement in the room, but decided to pretend that she was still asleep. She opened her eyes a bit, but the room was too dark for her to make out exactly what was happening. She did see a tall shadow looming, and she became terrified of what would happen to her if the intruder found out she was awake. Now awake and on her feet, the man asked Elizabeth to walk to the closet and take out her shoes. Elizabeth quickly complied. Mary Katherine heard her sister ask the man, "Why are you taking me?" Mary Katherine said she heard the man say something to the tune of "for ransom"....
