Great debut to a paranormal romance series

The Demon in Me is a funny and quick-paced debut to the Living in Eden series. Eden is a slightly psychic woman possessed by a "good" demon who lost his body 300 years ago as the result of a witch's curse. Their acclimation to one another and their search for the witch who cursed him is a fun, very quick read.

A Screwball Paranormal Romp

The paranormal world turns slightly screwball in //The Demon in Me//, the debut title in Michelle Rowan's new //Living in Eden// series. Eden Riley is attempting to keep herself financially afloat through her work at a run-down private investigation agency. After a fateful encounter with a murder suspect, Eden realizes she has a little more baggage than she's bargained for - including a stowaway demon in her psyche. Darrak is searching for the witch who cursed him over 300 years ago. He thinks that possessing Eden will get him closer to freedom - but that's not all Darrak winds up getting close to. //The Demon in Me// starts awkwardly, as Eden confronts the realities of living with a psychic passenger. Once Rowen completes this exposition, her writing loosens into a charmingly funny style, like a cross between Janet Evanovich and Laurell Hamilton. Eden is an especially winning character, both practical and oddly innocent, and her chemistry with Darrak rings true. Plus, the secondary characters, including a Wiccan self-help author and a renegade were-housecat, are a real hoot. Despite its clumsy beginning, many readers will enjoy //The Demon in Me// and look forward eagerly to more titles in this series. Reviewed by Jennifer King

Great Dialogue

Eden Riley is a skeptical psychic. After helping the Chief of Police's wife find her missing dog she was pressured into taking a job as a psychic consultant for the police. No one is more miserable about this arrangement than Eden. She freely admits that she doesn't believe she's psychic. She gets hunches that pan out, but she can't make herself have psychic visions. That means she's not psychic, right? Unfortunately for Eden, on her first consultant job she gets a hunch about where a serial killer is and ends up with more than she bargained for. All of a sudden she's hearing a man's voice in her head and she just doesn't know what's going on. Darrak is a demon who has to jump from host to host to survive. Unfortunately for Eden, that serial killer was his last host and when Detective Ben killed him Darrak was forced to jump to another body. Guess who that turned out to be? Yes, Darrak and Eden now inhabit the same body. This is something new for both of them as Eden has never had a demon in her (obviously) and Darrak has never jumped to a female before. Watching Darrak and Eden navigate the boundaries of their new life was fun. The author actually addresses subjects that the common reader would ask. What happens when Eden needs to go to the bathroom? What happens if she wants to get physical with someone? They have very funny exchanges throughout the book and the momentum never stops. I really liked that Eden didn't trust Darrak right away. I think it was very realistic for her to try to take the measures that she did. She unwittingly started an undesirable chain of events, but how was she supposed to know? She was looking out for number one. I also really liked the facts that we found out about Darrak. I liked that he tried to present himself in the best possible light and that Eden had to figure out if she was okay with the reality of who he was once she found out more about him. All in all a fun new series that I would definitely recommend.

The Demon in Me

Like with her Immortality Bites series Rowen doesn't cut her heroine any slack in this book. Eden is a psychic who is partner with the Triple A investigation company. When she helps her boyfriend Ben out in tracking down a serial killer the demon inside the killer is transferred to her. Her first instinct is to have a exorcist take care of him. That is until she learns the group of exorcists have views on good and evil that almost up there with the Nazis of World War 2 and the demon isn't so bad to be around after all. Especially if she can get the witch who curse the demon after his summoning can be talk into breaking the curse without harming Eden's soul the way the exorcists would of. In the mean time since her possession her and her partner's detective agency that was on the verge of bankruptcy suddenly have cases up to their eye balls in case requests from the likes of fairies and were wolves. There a big question on who side the demon hating shape shifter were cat room mate will be on.

Possessed by The Demon In Me!

Or should I say obsessed, mesmerized, entranced...any and all of those adjectives apply! I've been a big fan of Michelle's work since her first book, Bitten & Smitten. Since I loved the Immortality Bites series, color me a bit skeptical that she could write a hero I liked as much (or even a wee bit more) as IB's Thierry de Bennicoeur. I was wrong. Darrak, the demon who does the possessing (and the occasional ass kicking and/or romancing, as the situation warrants) in The Demon In Me is my favorite Rowen hero yet. Even though he has his angst - hello, demon - he has a sense of humor about the situation he and Eden find themselves in. He doesn't take himself too seriously and he's also pretty direct about who and what he is, though he dispenses the truth in manageable doses for the confused human who ends up being his earthly vessel. Eden's..refreshing, for a lack of a better word. Smart and self-aware, she's a character I loved spending time with. I very much related to what she was going through, as impossible as that sounds. You can't help but root for her to somehow find her improbable happy ending with the demon who has possessed her. But all's not as it seems with Eden, and I can't wait to find out more about her backstory in the next book. The scenes between Eden and Darrak sizzle, but I also laughed out loud - at work, no less - several times. Rowen writes great romantic comedy, but the subject matter definitely isn't all sunshine and roses. This is paranormal romance at its finest and the action is non-stop. Don't expect to have time to sleep or eat once you start this book, because I sure didn't. I sucked the story down so fast that October and Something Wicked seem VERY far away. A truly excellent start to what I know will be a fantastic series!
