Hoping to revive their sagging stage careers, a divorced couple appear in a play about Charles II and Nell Gwynn. But Nell's ghost haunts the theater. Offended by the play's spin, she revives her... This description may be from another edition of this product.
Anyone with an interest in either theater or the Restoration will enjoy this book. The author has created an entertaining tale of ego driven modern theater folk and their encounter with Charles II. Here we read less about the King's mistresses but gain insight into his motives. Too often he and Nell Gwynn come off as silly and window dressing; here she is troubled and demanding, and he a somewhat rueful rouge. His reactions to both the good and bad in our age especially caught my attention, as did his perspective on the times he lived in. The work runs a speedy 183 pages, and I recommend it for its charm and style.
Vibrant Colors

As an avid reader of both fantasy and romance, but someone who rarely sees new thematic variations on the usual hackneyed stuff, this novel struck me by its literary stylishness and vivid morphing of themes. The author paints his effects with vibrant hues. Even the darkest settings in his hands come out in crisp rainbow colors. He has a love of his historical characters, Charles II and Nell Gwynn, that made me feel as if they were with me in the room while I was reading - not just on the page. His modern people didn't touch me as much, but if you've read anything about King Charles and mistress Nell before, you will come away from this book knowing them better than ever. This is a quick read, and not overly deep, but as an evening's entertainment it's more satisfying than anything I've read in these genres in years. Highly recommended.
