Book Overview

The Great Lakes--Erie, Huron, Michigan, Ontario, and Superior--hold 20 percent of the world's supply of surface fresh water and provide sustenance, work, and recreation for tens of millions of Americans. But they are under threat as never before, and their problems are spreading across the continent. The Death and Life of the Great Lakes is prize-winning reporter Dan Egan's compulsively readable portrait of an ecological catastrophe happening right before our eyes, blending the epic story of the lakes with an examination of the perils they face and the ways we can restore and preserve them for generations to come.

Informational, engaging, and overall, just well written.

Dan Egan does such a great job at taking you from the history of the root of the problem to the problems we face today. He depicts the value of the Great Lakes as a resource for both humans and animals. He suggests where we went wrong and offers information that is essential for us to consider as we move forward in managing this resource.

Great gift for Captain Kip

My husband is a certified sailing captain in the Great Lakes and I gave him this book for Christmas and he read it in a few days cover to cover.
