Still the Classic Reference

Although it was written in 1955, this book was brought back into print in 1986 and is still the best layman's reference on the Dead Sea Scrolls. Burrows, who viewed the earliest find as early as March 1948, goes into great detail on the discovery, the contents, the historical allusions, and the implications for textual criticism. He even prints English translations of the main extra-biblical texts at the back of the book.
