Inspiring

The author takes her readers on an inspiring physical and spiritual journey full of faith and resilience. This is the kind of book you can read over and over to remind you that nothing in life in impossible and no obstacle to great if you have faith in God and remain grounded in family. The main character, Mama, is the type of mother women strive to become, despite her flaws, because of her undying devotion to her children. Her brand of sacrifice is rare and refreshing. During a time when the world is tempted to feel pity for Haiti and it's people, Regis reminds us of the strength and resourcefulness of Haitian people. This memoir is a must read, again and again!

Compelling Personal Story

Ms. Regis has a compelling personal story to share! Her book is well-written and meaningful; the book reminds the reader of the power of family, enchants us with everyday heroes, and inspires us to be better citizens, regardless of from where we originate.

Resilience and Love

I met Jacquie Regis before reading her memoir of growing up in Haiti in the 1960s and 1970s. Jacquie is vivacious, articulate and very comfortable telling her story, a story she needs to tell and one we need to hear. Food and money is scarce in Jacquie's family, but mother love is not nor is the insistence on education not only for her sons but for her one daughter. What permeates life in Haiti besides poverty is fear, fear of reprisals from an extremely oppressive and repressive government. It is in response to this that Jacquie's mother makes the bold move to New York that changes Jacquie's life forever. Jacquie's story is a compelling read.

Well Done!

The author takes you along for a very personal ride. Her ability and willingness to share openly is a sign of her openness and courage. Once I started, I could not wait to read each chapter. Each story shared is personal and provides a very real look into Haitian life. Highly recommend!

A Source of Inspiration

I have finished reading "The Daugher of l'Arsenal". I was inspired by the author's ability to struggle and overcome difficult circumstances, even at a very young age. I could also relate very well to the challenges she had to deal with as an immigrant, being one myself. However, what made the reading worth it for me is the fact that she comes out positive and strong out of what could have made many others vainquished and bitter. This is a book for our times.
