A good solid look at life aboard one of His Majesty's cruisers before and during World War Two. The story covers the life of the fictitious HMS Antigone a Leander Class light cruiser with four twin six inch guns. It starts in Belfast toward the end of the ships construction and follows the ship and crew to the Bermuda and West Indies Station. As the world races toward war the Antigone sails around South America showing the flag. When war finally comes the ship is stripped for battle and ends up in the Med. Although the story is somewhat slow it gives the reader a very good example of what it was like to serve in a cruiser in the Royal Navy during these times. The beauty of the book is it covers not just the Captain and officers but also many of the Chiefs and ratings as well. The book is about the men of the Royal Navy with all their strengths and weaknesses and is well worth the read.
