Crucible Year is one of Norma Johnston's best books (I've read all of them and many of the others she's written under other pseudonyms). It's a searing, gritty look into the world of hypocritical adults from the perspective of teenagers whose ethics are far more caring and sensitive than the adults they are supposed to respect. This book deals with major issues that teens face every day but that adults would rather ignore: gay teens troubled by their families, censorship at school, teen suicide and self-destructive behaviors, parents in extra-marital affairs, the peer pressure that teens exert and withstand around alcohol and drugs, first crushes and confusion about sex, religious hypocrites, national politics and its relation to historical events, good teachers leaving the profession because they are thwarted from doing their best work & creating challenging curricula, and the creative process that teenagers can develop with encouragement and support. All this, besides creating a thoughtful, complex, and interesting story.
