Highwaymen, Murder and a strong Heroine

Georgiana Grey is a lively and independent young woman. She is fortunate enough to be able to live on her own with her cousin as a companion and her trusty maid as confidant. Her stuffy brother is trying to get her married to the annoying Lord Bartholomew, a relative of his wife, but Georgiana is sure she can deal with that. When Sir Robert Foster is found murdered on the road and the highwayman, the Crimson Cavalier is being blamed, Georgiana has reason to try and solve the crime. Sir Robert hasn't made himself friends in her own household, nor was he liked much elsewhere. For instance, he had been angling for a marriage to the young Miss Louisa Winters, but Maxwell Lakesby, her all-too perceptive guardian, was against it. Lakesby has his own reasons to dislike Foster. Georgiana has secrets of her own that she needs to keep, secrets that her investigation may endanger. There are highwaymen and hold-ups and disreputable taverns, which very much seem in the realm of romance, but which also add quite a bit of fun and adventure. The blurb on the back cover puts the time period as late 18thC, which makes sense given all the highwaymen, although there is little indication in the books that help in pinning the setting down. It is in London, with mention of a few sites and fashions that could be late 18thC or even Regency, but that's about it. I wish the setting was a little better detailed, but it's not important to the enjoyment of the tale. The mystery is fun. There are many suspects and Georgiana does her best to try to narrow it down and find the killer. There are also nights out to the theatre and to dinners and parties along the way. Georgiana makes for a smart and fearless heroine and sleuth. I'd happily read more of her adventures.
