In Hoc Signo Vinces

Christianity has always suffered from various schismatic and heretical sects. Gnosticism, which emerged in the first century and survived for centuries afterwards, held beliefs that directly conflicted with the teachings of Christ. Gnostics argued that only a select few "enlightened" individuals could receive truth (gnosis) from God. They also denied the humanity of Jesus Christ since they believed that all matter is evil. Other movements and sects arose, among them people who claimed Jesus' divinity was of a lesser quality than God's (Arianism), that the Son of God never actually became human or suffered on the cross because his divine nature could never allow such a thing to really happen (Docetism), and even an early apocalyptic movement led by a man named Montanus who claimed he received messages from the Holy Spirit commanding him to lead Christians into the end times (Montanism). Scads of secret societies, from the Freemasons to the Illuminati, supposedly arose to challenge the hegemony of the Catholic Church. The schisms that led to the Eastern Orthodox Church, the rival popes in Avignon, and the Protestant Reformation also challenged the supremacy of Rome at one time or another. Dissent within the Church is nothing new. In "The Conspiracy to Silence the Son of God," a collection of essays on modern threats to Christianity, Tal Brooke and his fellow writers often invoke the specter of Gnosticism, Arianism, and a few other -isms to highlight threats to the teachings of Jesus Christ. Today's challenges to Christianity most often fall under the rubric of "New Age" religions. It's obvious to anyone remotely familiar with these faiths that we're dealing with far more than healing crystals and burning incense. New Age religions attempt to incorporate the touchy-feely values of multiculturalism, radical feminism, and paganism into a non-judgmental system with worldwide appeal. You'll hear lots of talk about "global consciousness" and "spiritual awareness" when you're dealing with New Agers. It's not the sort of awareness that requires much on the part of the adherent, however. They often overtly and covertly attack Christianity for its reliance on judging others as required by the admonitions of Jesus, for perceived discrimination against women and non-Christian societies, and for the rather acrimonious history of forced conversion in indigenous communities. New Age faiths attempt to downplay the importance of Christ by distorting his message or elevating other historical figures to divine stature on par with Jesus. Brooke and other writers challenge these assertions in a series of essays that cover a broad number of topics. In "Preparing for a Global Religion," Brooke examines the writings of Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, arguing that this French Jesuit laid the foundations for the modern New Age movement by positing a coming together of all religions into a single world faith. Peter Jones contributes two articles, "Apostasy and the Descent into

A Book to Open the Eyes

This book is a MUST HAVE for the library of the Christian who does a lot of evangelism and also for the library of the prayer warrior. The movements that are now present in society, New Age and others, are shown how they are not only against what the Holy Scriptures say, but they are also shown on how they are dangerous to us, as Christians and as a society. I recommend this book highly.

Tal does a great job, but comes up one star short !

CTSTSOG is another insightful offering by Tal and several contributing authors. Truly, Jesus is the target of conspirators. Both New Age and Apostate Christianity are now merrily winding their way down the broad path together. Tal and the others contributing to this book do however leave a gaping hole in not informing the reader of possibly the single most important factor in this conspiracy. The missing star in my review represents the omission of the evidence concerning the corrupt bible versions that have been trying to silence Jesus since the ink started drying on the autographs. However I think this book to be an excellent primer for Gail Riplingers "New Age Bible Versions. She more than fills in the gaping holes and supplies the missing fifth star.
