Superb tour of the mentality of a collector

This book certainly deserves more attention. I can't do it justice in a review as I read it many years ago, in the 1980s. But I'm compelled to chime in since so little is written about it here. It remains in my memory as the best depiction of the mind of a collector that I've ever read. The protagonist becomes obsessed with pre-Columbian art, with discriminating between objects, with authenticity and with acquiring and caring for objects. Elegantly, sensitively written, as I recall. Remembering the book makes me want to read it again after all of these years.

A book which will appeal to both prior fans of MR. BRIDGE and MRS. BRIDGE and new comers

One cold morning on a business trip a Manhattan insurance executive drives to a picturesque artist's community in New Mexico to encounter a small icon in a shop which will change his life. Mulbach is no art fan, but the piece seems irresistible at the time - and holds much power, as does a book which will appeal to both prior fans of MR. BRIDGE and MRS. BRIDGE and new comers. Diane C.
