My quest for better Lingo guides never ends. After reading a poor review from another reader of Rosenzweig's "Comprehensive Guide to Lingo," I was apprehensive in purchasing the book. However, I'm glad that I went ahead and made the investment. I like the way the author relates the structure and formats of Lingo. Of the half-dozen other Lingo references on my bookshelf, this one was the only one that led me to the correct scripting that I needed for a large Director project at work. If Rosenzweig would update this book for v 8.5, I'd likely rate it 5 stars.

For another computer book, I rated this one a 10 based on it's relative simplistic approach and ease of understanding. After trying to find a decent book to use to teach myself and my students lingo, this one is at the top of my list. Some of the others I read were based on files that I could not convert or understand, chapters that confused the heck out of me, etc. The Comprehensive Guide to Lingo, by Gary Rosenzweig starts out VERY simple, and builds a strong background for future development. This is the sort of book I recommend to anybody with any various level of background with director. The book is also the perfect book for a beginner [relative to the others lingo books out there.]
The best all-around Lingo guide available

Compared to other books on the market concerning Lingo programming, this one certainly carries one of the heftiest price tags. But though I initially shuddered at the cash register, I am now convinced that the value of the material was more than worth the price. The Comprehensive Guide to Lingo starts with a Beginner's Workbook. And the first thing you read is what a "movie" is, and what a score is. Don't groan; it picks up really fast after that. Pretty soon you're breezing through the beginner's material and ready to take on the Advanced section, and later the Expert section. Rosenzweig keeps the pace up while managing to stay comprehensible throughout. Not only that, he doesn't simply give the Macromedia version for idiots, but offers more complete codes which provide greater programming flexibility. And if you ever forget what a variable is called, or need to look up syntax, you don't have to go dig out the manuals that came with Director; there is a complete reference section in the back. The book also includes the only worthwhile CD-ROM that I've ever received with a computer guide. It includes all the scripted movies discussed in the book, ready to be copied or modified for your own projects. I know there are a few other Lingo scripting guides, but none are as worthy as this one of its title. This one really is The Comprehensive Guide to Lingo.
