Concise, Enjoyable Primer for Finding a Job!

Lawrence Danks does in this "how-to" book what so many other authors should learn to emulate: He gets to the point, and does not pontificate needlessly. In 130 pages, Danks explains everything from forming prospects to what can be expected while fulfilling the duties of that first job. In a short handbook, Danks is more replete than many authors who have written huge volumes on the competitiveness of the job market to the proper font to use in a résumé. He also gives adequate reasoning behind his prescribed actions for job seekers. While I liked the many examples this book provided, it could use some more examples of résumés and cover letters. Also, it needs to be updated as it is almost 15 years old, and many of the concepts are fast becoming obsolete. As an instructor of Business Communication, I still use parts of the text as a supplement in my classes for its no-nonsense, to-the-point approach that is helpful in conveying ideas to my students. For the college student who is beginning to get the questions we all had to face ("So what are you going to do after school?" "Have you started applying for any jobs yet?" "How are you going to pay back all those loans?") this is an easy reader that will make life a lot easier. While a 2nd edition would be helpful, even with its age this text is still a worthwhile investment.
