Book Overview

The Complete Gospels is the first publication ever to collect the canonical gospels and their extracanonical counterpoints under one cover. The selected extracanonical gospels date from the first and second centuries, are independent of the canonical gospels, and significantly contribute to our understanding of the developments in the Jesus tradition leading up to and surrounding the New Testament gospels. Two additional texts, the Gospel of Judas and the Gospel of the Savior, and a new text of Q are found in this fourth edition. Each gospel begins with an introduction that sets the text in its ancient and historical contexts and discusses the overall structure and central themes. Cross references point out the numerous parallel passages, intratextual indicators, and thematic parallels so the reader can see how the individual passages of a gospel fit into the rich tapestry of Jewish and early Christian texts. Notes explain important translation issues, supply necessary background information, offer guidance to difficult passages, and honestly indicate problems in the text or in our understanding of them. This volume is the premier publication of the Scholars Version translation of the gospels a fresh translation from the original languages into living American English that is entirely free of ecclesiastical control. The Scholars Version intentionally drops the pretense that academics have all the answers. It strives to avoid both talking down, and over the heads of readers. The goal is to make these fascinating texts intelligible and inviting to all who want to study them. This description may be from another edition of this product.

Great and Informative Read!

I am someone deconstructing my old beliefs, and is generally interested in theology. There is a lot of informative content, and a very clear translation! It talks in depth about things most believers do not know about: The Secret Gospel of Mark, "Q", and gospels that did not make it into current New Testaments. The footnotes serve as a great guide to each story in each gospel. As someone who is a "lay person" relative to the...

For Serious Gospel Study

This book is for serious gospel study. The word "gospel" comes from a Greek term "euangelion" which means "good news." Within the New Testament the term refers to the message of Jesus, but eventually the term was applied to numerous formats for carrying the message. _The Complete Gospels_, as Robert Funk writes in the foreward, is "a bold step in gathering all the surviving gospels (from the early Christian era)... into one...

Matthew, Mark, Luke, John and Who?

This is an absolutely fascinating book. This is a very important compilation, both from a scholarly and a popular perspective. It has only been within the past generation that dialogue and interest in how the Bible came to be the Bible has grown beyond the narrow confines of academic analysts and theorists, and into the mainstream discussion of churches and independent readers. While most of the material in Robert Miller's...

Refreshing and Exciting

I have found the book very simple to read and understand. It does away with the conventional and difficult language of the conventional bible. For the first time that I was able to read the bible's gospels with such interest, passion and ease. I would even appreciate it if the old testament would be retranslated to accomodate the simple and exciting language adopted by "The Complete Gospels". The content itslef is obviously...
