When Augusta and her younger brother are forced to take riding lessons by their social-climbing mother at the local stable Augusta is angry and determined to fail. However, her hard-nosed Russian trainer and parents won't let her off that easily; especially when her parents bought two quality thoroughbreds before the siblings learned to ride! Although the summer timeline of the book was a bit unbelievable (a new rider cantering and jumping within two weeks?) the family plot, stories of new friendships, and Augusta's romance round out the book into an enjoyable story. The first-person narrative adds dimension and realism which by itself is already quite good. Recommended for horse lovers and elementary school libraries.
