The characters in this story are alive

The characters in this story are alive, real, intriguing and rife with the smells, tastes and memories of childhood. The main character Pru, is on a journey of personal discovery that is inextricably woven into the mystery of her mother's death and the memories of her father whose complex experiences in WW2 in Burma colored his relationship with his family and his country. Kat explores the profound impact that war and the consequent post traumatic stress can have on individuals and those they love. She unearths the ways in which family secrets can impact how people relate to others in their lives and how not knowing can be even more impactful and devastating than knowing. There's a multi-generational aspect to the story that weaves the characters together and provides them with depth and legitimacy. The mystery of the coat in the woods and the eventual discovery of how it got there lays the foundation for an excellent story that will capture the reader from the first page to the last.
