Concise, practical, compassionate

Dr. Cutrer's earlier works have established him as a compassionate voice when ministering in the face of life-altering traumas. In his latest work, The Church Leader's Handbook, he trains staff and volunteers to provide pastoral care in the midst of such crises. He begins with suggestions about how to prepare for crisis care and visitation etiquette. Then he devotes a chapter each to providing specific counsel for helping in twelve different situations such as sexual addiction, STDs, divorce, infertility, domestic violence, sexual assault, and eating disorders. The book closes with three chapters on crisis prevention--premarital counseling, child protection policy, and church discipline. Each chapter includes a list of additional resources for further reading on a specific crisis issue. In the appendix readers will find real-life case studies that are excellent for group discussion and include lists of insensitive remarks to avoid (like "It's better this way--he wouldn't want to live as a vegetable"). Dr. Cutrer's concise, practical guide belongs on the bookshelf of every Christ-follower desiring to lighten the load of another's grief.

Practical Hands On Material

When the call comes in the middle of the night about a disaster, a death, someone in need and you have no idea of what to do; keep this book near by. The material covered by the author is practical and insightful from experience that can work for you. In reading this book it is my recommendation to personalize it, mark it up, make notes, and high light page after page. This book will help you become better equipped to help others as they walk through sickness, pain, as well as life and death situations. If I was to give it a thumbs up review, it is without a doubt 2 thumbs up!

If you are looking for an all-in-one ministry book to help you deal with different crises in your church, look no further. This book is a must-have for anyone in ministry. Dr. Cutrer does a great job giving very practical advice and does so through a biblical worldview. I am confident that I will be pulling this book off my bookshelf many times in the future.
