one of the greatest books on my bookshelf

I have owned this book for 20 years - and I *am* still influenced by it! There is so much information and research compiled in here and the tone is wonderful; plus the photographs!!!!!!! I don't believe, in many ways, we have yet caught up to some of the kid lib and city design and social thoughts that were being expanded in the 70s...I havent' seen a book this good since. so sad! dont' rely on only the new or the internet. ( I see that when such a great book by a great man - completely famous - has no reviews up) GET yourself to the library and the used bookstores and find some treasures. (((((((Colin Ward)))))) xoxooxox thank you!!!!!!!!! from China Martens author of "The Future Generation: a zine-book for subculture parents, kids, friends, and others" from Atomic Book Company - - - (from the back of the book) In an evocative and panoramic account of urban childhood, Colin Ward brings to life the myriad and subtle ways in which the child has used the street in the past and still does today. Against this background he asks whether it is true, as very many people believe, that something has been lost in the way children experience their urban surroundings; why some children show endless ingenuity in exploitng what the city offers while othes are isolated and predatory; and what can be done, at a time when a significant proportion of the city's children have come to be a t war with their enviroment, to make the links between the city and child more fruitfulf and enjoyable for both. A probing, caring, and timely exploration of the ways in which the city can serve or fail children, this book aises urgent questions for teachers, parents, and policy-makers. Colidn Ward is renowned as a pioneer in ubrban education and the founder-editor of the BULLETIN OF ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION> He is the holder of a Leverhulme Fellowship for the interpretatio of the built envrioement and the author of STREERWORK; TEH EXPLODING SHCOOL; VANDALISM; BRITISH SCHOOL BUILDINGS; and TENANTS TAKE OVER.

Pantheon Books
