The Capricorn Bracelet began as a series of radio scripts Rosemary Sutcliff wrote for the BBC. She later expanded them to form six stories. The bracelet of the title is passed down through successive generations of a Roman military family serving in northern Britain. Each story is told in the first person, and centers on one significant event: the destruction of a city, a new leader assuming command, a Saxon coastal raid. Rosemary Sutcliff is perhaps the best juvenile historical novelist. She published 46 books for children; less than half are readily available. If you are new to her work, begin with The Eagle of the Ninth, The Silver Branch, Outcast, The Lantern Bearers, Warrior Scarlet - all are in print. If you gobbled up what's in print and are hungry for more, The Capricorn Bracelet will whet your appetite (and it's relatively inexpensive used). I hope someday soon a publisher will bring back The Mark of the Horse Lord, Dawn Wind, Knight's Fee, The Shield Ring, and other Sutcliff titles I'm searching for.
