One morning Elsie, a cabbage farmer, discovers that half of her crop is missing. She decides to stand watch in her cabbage patch all night to catch the culprit. Unfortunately, she falls asleep, only to awaken to even fewer cabbages! With the help of her two cats and some homemade cabbage soup, Elsie gains control of the long-eared perpetrators. Instead of nibbling her cabbages, they end up keeping her warm at night. Children will enjoy being a step or two ahead of Elsie in this cozy story about cultivating friendship.
After you read this one, why not make some cabbage soup with your kids? Chop up a head of cabbage, put it in a big pot with a can of diced tomatoes, a few chopped up potatoes (they're in the story too), maybe a big pumpkin (not sure this is a great taste addition) and some chicken broth. Add a few spices and you've got cabbage soup to share with your rabbity friends. More ideas at cookingupreading.com
A DELICIOUSLY DIFFERENT TALE
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 20 years ago
Delightful watercolor illustrations enliven this story of friendship. You're familiar with "cabbages and kings," well, this is cabbages and friendship. For years Elsie has lived on a small farm where she raises potatoes, tomatoes, peas, and pumpkins. But best of all are Elsie's cabbages. She enjoys her life; it's quite simple on her little plot of land with her two cats, Fluff and Gordo. One morning when Elsie goes out to the field to collect her cabbages she is chagrined to find half of them gone. Only stumps remain rather than the thick green heads. Determined to find out who or what is eating her cabbages Elsie decides to stay in the field all night. Unfortunately Elsie falls asleep and awakens to find even more cabbages have been eaten. She is discouraged and exhausted. She sleeps through the whole day and into the night. Fluff and Gordo determine to help their mistress who is now awake and busily making cabbage soup. The delicious aroma of this soup brings some unexpected visitors to her house. Are they friends or the mysterious cabbage eaters? Young readers will never guess the outcome of this deliciously different tale. - Gail Cooke
