Varied stories about future dominated by mind storage

This is a short story collection set in the world of "Tower to the Stars" (the author's first novel). Although not uniformly successful, the stories are ambitious in scope and make use of an inventive plot device. Technology permits direct electronic recording of the human mind into a permanent storage format (the "bug" of the title), with sometimes nightmarish results. Convicts are condemned to live out eternity as automated space exploration vessels, while others enjoy electronic immortality in escapist fantasy.
