Rowsome's book is an interesting story about the history of human fire use. From Homo erectus to Count Rumford and Ben Franklin, and to us today, fire has held some relevance. Hearths, chimneys, and open fires are looked at historically and socially. Use of axes, saws, and other tools related to bringing in firewood, as well as tools used by the fire (e.g., pokers) are also discussed. Religion and olde rites are talked about and speculated on, though not too deeply. An example, Zarathushtra (commonly called Zoroaster) is mentioned for his use of fire in his of fire in his religious views. An interesting book, but there is some sexist remarks (such as when he mentions the use of the axe). Overall however, the interesting historical tid-bits seem to almost make up for the few remarks.
