Step Across the Border

The night before his wedding, a posed, intelligent lawyer discovers a world both unlike and like his own outside of his door - just beyond the Veil. Oliver finds himself in a place populated with mythological characters. In this strange new world, his strength, smarts, and loyalty are tested, and he must forge alliances in order to survive. As readers of trilogies are well aware, it is crucial that the second book in the series be strong, connecting the start of the story to its conclusion, keeping readers interested and engaged. The Borderkind certainly does all of that, and more. As Oliver straddles the fine line between the world he knows and the land beyond the Veil, the disappearance and murder investigations continue in his hometown, and the Sandman uses his sister's capture to his advantage. Golden has a flair for urban fantasy, weaving various sections of the story together in an intricate pattern, making both contemporary characters and classic legends come to life. He's unafraid to put his characters in jeopardy, and not all of them survive. The Borderkind is the second in The Veil trilogy by Christopher Golden. I highly recommend reading all three books, so make sure that you read them in order! The story begins with The Myth Hunters and wraps up in The Lost Ones.

Oliver, Jack, and Kitsune

Christopher Golden continues his great trilogy with The Borderkind. As someone who had never even heard of this author before buying The Myth Hunters (Book One), I have been pleasantly surprised. To be honest, I usually stick with Stephen King, Dean Koontz, etc. But, I'm glad I picked up the first book because it has really been a joy to read. If you haven't read the first book, you can't skip it because you'd be lost, so read Myth Hunters first. If you have already read Myth Hunters....well, you are already reading this one I bet!

superb dark fantasy

He was suffering from cold feet the night before his marriage when Jack Frost busted into his Maine home pleading with him to save his life. Stunned lawyer Oliver Bascomb crosses the veil into the Two-Kingdoms where he finds a magical sword (see THE MYTH HUNTERS). When he returns to the earthly realm he learns of the murder of his father and more important the abduction of his sister Collette held prisoner by the lethal Sandman. He vows to rescue his sibling and avenge his dad, but is unaware that he is the prime suspect. Meanwhile his jilted fiancée Julianna Whitney, still believes in his goodness and that he did not kill his father or the other corpses haunting Oliver's every step though the evidence speaks otherwise. She teams up with homicide detective Ted Halliwell to track down Oliver. Christopher Golden is going to strike gold with this superior dark fantasy sequel that can stand on its own but is enhanced by reading the equally superb first tale. The story line is action-packed and stars a real American hero and a strong support cast from both sides of the veil. However, the key to this delightful saga is the belief that the Two Kingdoms and its fantasy creatures are not just plausible they are real. Harriet Klausner

Cant wait for the final chapter.

I just finished The Borderkind. It was definately a great followup in the veil trilogy. I cant wait for the final chapter to see how everything turns out. Theres some great battles, new scary enemies. The only real criticism I have, is that I hate cliff-hanger endings. Unfortunately, you kind of need one in the middle of a trilogy.
