Book Overview

Barbara Thiering's previous works have been bestsellers in her native Australia, and Focus magazine said that the impact of her work '...may turn out to be as profound as that of Darwin's Origin of the Species'. This new book continues to reveal the 'real' Jesus and the history of his time by applying to the New Testament the insights and information contained in the Dead Sea Scrolls. The author argues that the Gospel of John was in fact written in...

JESUS THE ESSENE-PESHER RIDDLE

This book is a remarkable discovery, and very helpful in understanding the Pesher Technique. Jesus had to be The Creator to cause the words to read as we have it in the King James, yet it was quite different as it really happened. The Pesher should be explained, and what a mystery to unfold! Barbara Thiering is my favorite writer on the secret life of Jesus the Essene. Examine the meanings of the Pesher in the back of this book. It was heartbreaking to read how his hands had been damaged so that he could not ever write a book again. The heavenly languages of Jesus are so complex that his intelligence can not be written in human words. Jesus is the Master of all languages, and this book is magnificent! Also, read "Jesus the Man", which Barbara wrote. In discovering the Riddle, read "She Who Is", Elizabeth Johnson, and "Prayers to She Who Is", William Cleary, and a short, but very interesting account of a live witness of the crucifixon in "The Secret Life of Jesus the Essene", Raymond W. Bernard. It is good that John was written by Jesus, and even better that Paul was a Gnostic writer, See "The Gnostic Paul", Elaine Pagels, confirming they all were Essenes, teaching Gnosis, Jesus and Sophia, the Bride and Bridegroom.

Back to the drawing board for organized Christianity

When I was young, some 50-odd years ago, I got what was called a "decoder ring". Probably procured from a cereal box, this otherwise worthless toy became magic in the hands of an imaginative five-year-old. All the mysteries of my limited universe were solved in an instant, and I experienced both power and peace of mind from the knowledge that no secret could be concealed from me.I have just finished Barbara Thiering's edition), Jesus of the Apocalypse, and The Book That Jesus Wrote. Thiering has discovered a "decoder ring" of her own in the form of a "Pesher", which she says is found in the Dead Sea Scrolls. Unlike mine, her decoder is real, and with it, she has revealed secrets which may have far-reaching, perhaps shattering consequences in modern church and theological circles. A Pesher is a code used to decipher Biblical era texts that were written to appear one way on their face, but, after applying the Pesher, reveal an entirely different meaning underneath. The technique was used by the authors to convey sensitive, potentially dangerous information to select religious faithful, while concealing that information from their various hostile captors (Romans, Babylonians, etc.). Ironically, this technique has been so effective that the underlying truth in these texts has been hidden for millennia from the very people it was intended to inform.Thiering's trilogy is not an easy read. She often tries to cram two pounds of revelations into a one pound bag. She assumes that the reader is already familiar with a slew of "minor" Biblical characters (several Herods, Agrippas, Antipas's, Ananus's etc.), who, through the Pesher, become far more important (and annoying) than was formerly acknowledged. The depiction of Jesus throughout her trilogy is so radically different from customary belief that you lose count of the number of traditionally accepted events (the Virgin Birth, the Crucifixion and Resurrection, the Miracles, the Sermon on the Mount, the Parables, etc.) which are tediously and summarily dismissed and reconfigured by the Pesher interpretation. In addition, not only does Jesus survive the cross to live for another 40 years, but he is the author of the Gospel of John.In spite of some fascinating insights and cathartic exegesis, the resultant picture of "The Christ Event" painted by Thiering's Pesher translation is not pretty. It delineates the smarmy, petty internal power struggles among principal leaders within the Judaic and early Christian churches. You will learn more than you ever wanted to know about the influence and arcane practices of the Essenes, who, like it or not, are indispensable and crucial in the Pesher scheme of things. The importance and validity of Thiering's work will have to be tested over time, but, in the meantime, once you have read her trilogy, you cannot help but question, if not significantly revise, traditional understanding of events described in the Bible and collateral texts. If her research and conclusions

Dr. Thiering makes one see the light!

What Dr. Thiering writes is very thought provoking and gives an insight to the actual events that occurred in the century before and after the birth of Jesus. What I especially enjoyed was the way she describes the genealogy from Heli through Jesus' son Jesus Justus. I disagree with Dr. Thiering on her claim that Jesus was born prematurely or was "illegitimate". The clan of the "All" (Heli-Joseph) followed the Jubilee Calendar that included a census when the year began during the Spring Equinox whereas the Pharisees (the clan of the Many) used a lunar calendar with the census being taken when their year begins during the Autumn Equinox. The dynastic marriage was not between Jesus and Mary Magdalene but between Joseph (All) and the Virgin Mary (Many).
